“Unknown system”

A project titled “Sweden Meets Linneus in Japan 2007” was created for the Linneus jubileum in 2007. Participating artists devised their own interpretations of Linnaeus’s world and work.

My contribution is an investigation of the binary nomenclature system with which Linnaeus named and categorized different species. Using this system, and with Latin’s trenchant language, I have taken an excursion in today’s world of images on the internet. I have given the collages names which address and emphasize the associations with contemporary phenomenons, occurrences, and concepts. This is an unknown system created by humans, not nature. The image and text are laminated between three layers of glass and mounted in a metal frame at eye level.

This project was first shown in Tokyo at The National Science Museum.
